How to make a quick chili!
I know, I know…
Chili is meant to be simmered for HOURS and hours and is always better the longer you cook it. BUT my goal here at Bite Sized Kitchen is to bring you appetizer ideas that are quick and easy while still tasting delicious!
And since the Super Bowl is RIGHT around the corner and it’s still cold out, chili is the BEST thing to serve to your family or guests!
And I have to say I am super excited this year because our Philadelphia Eagles are in it!! Derek and I are so excited.
Do any of you complete a Super Bowl prop bet with your friends and family?? It makes it that much more exciting especially if you don’t care who wins. If you need a prop bet form, let me know below! I have a great template that can be used for any team each year!

So back to these chili bites! This is my solution to and quick and easy appetizer.
Use Hormel Chili’s canned chili. They have chili with AND without beans! So use whichever you like!
Then I added some other ingredients to kick it up a notch and its done!
You can mix the ingredients in cold OR warm it up in a sauce pan, crock-pot or slow cooker before you add it to your puff pastry.
Easy Puff Pastry Appetizer Squares
I absolutely LOVE puff pasty. I just can’t help myself. I know it is not the healthiest thing but it makes almost anything you top it with that much more amazing!
I always have a box in my freezer so I know I can pull it out when company is coming.
*Puff pastry tip*
Defrost your dough in the refrigerator otherwise the puff pastry dough will stick!
If you want to make these ahead of time, you can do two things:
- Bake the puff pastry squares ahead of time and keep the chili in a crock-pot on ‘warm’. Then just top the baked squares with the hot chili when your guests arrive!
- Set your pastry squares onto a baking sheet and top with the cold chili mixture. When guests arrive, pop it in the oven and bake it all at once.
You do not need to bake your puff pastry dough ahead of time but you can. In this recipe, I just topped the raw dough with the chili and baked as is!

An easy mini puff pastry appetizer that will be sure to please any crowd! These 5 Ingredient Puffed Chili Bites are my go-to appetizer for tailgate or sports parties! With only 6 ingredients, you can't beat them!
- 1 Package Frozen Puff Pastry Dough (2 Sheets)
- 1 Can Hormel Chili (with or without beans)
- 2 Tsp. Red Wine Vinegar
- 2 Scallions
- 1/2 Cup Shredded Cheese (Jack, Mozzarella & Cheddar bag mix)
- 1/2 Cup Sour Cream (Optional)
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F and take out your puff pastry dough.
Mix chili, vinegar, and scallions together in bowl and set aside. (Reserve 1-2 tbsp of scallions to garnish.)
Prepare your puff pastry dough by opening puff pastry sheets and cutting each sheet into 12 equal squares. (Tip* Working with cold dough is easier than room temperature!)
Place a tbsp of chili mixture onto the center of each square. Refreeze any extra dough for another time. You should get at least 18 bites (1 1/2 sheets.)
Bake for 12-14 minutes or until pastry dough is golden brown.
You can choose to add the cheese and stick it back in the oven to melt the cheese OR you can just add the cheese and serve right away!
Then add a dollop of sour cream to each followed by chopped scallions for a better presentation!
Use a ziplock baggie to neatly squeeze sour cream on top!
Prepare the filling a day ahead of time or freeze filling a few weeks in advance!
You can choose to serve sour cream on the side instead.
If you are bringing these to a party, assemble and place on baking sheet (raw) covered in foil. Then ask the host of the party to pop in the oven when you get there! (no foil needed)
